Please ensure you have completed the Online Basic Referee Training and AYSO Safe Haven before attending one of the classroom sessions below.  Please bring certificate of completion for both online courses.

Youth referees, 12 or older, are encouraged to attend.

Returning Referee Update

All certified referees are required* to attend one of the following Update sessions: -

* We may grant an exception to those referees that attend professional referee association monthly meetings.

Having the right kind of soccer referee shoes is very of paramount importance.  The correct shoes provide the right support and comfort which is vital considering the amount of running that a referee during a match.

Whilst there are no specific requirements, other than the shoes are to predominantly black in color, I recommend that you get a pair of soccer referee shoes that you can use on multiple surfaces.  Proper grip is vital in dry and especially wet weather. Good support for the heel and ankle are will aid in preventing injury.

I also highly suggest that you don’t wear cleats which although fine for the occasional odd game; they will not be comfortable and can end up hurting your feet and ankles in the long run.

I have personally used both the Vizari shoes and the Diadora Soccer Shoes.  The Diadora shoes are lightweight and are made if synthetic leather which makes they very easy to clean. They also provide good traction on grass and turf pitches alike.

Soccer referee jersey come in fairly standard style although on occasions there may be some leeway amongst local administrators of soccer associations about the colors and patterns of referee jerseys that are permitted to be worn.

Whilst most referee jerseys issued by various associations will be gold, you may need to or want to get alternate colors especially if you are involved in refereeing in tournaments year round. Alternative jersey colors include black, blue, red, and green.

A Good Alternative: Green Jersey

It seems a good alternative jersey color is green because it clashes the least with player jerseys.

The Kwik Goal Premier Referee Jerseys are really good deals. They are made from polyester and come with dual breast pockets and a 2” round Velcro patch for your official referee badge.

The document apparently contains references to indirect freekicks and corner kicks.

Sheffield FC sold the rulebook to raise money… I wonder if the book was worth more than the club?

League issued uniforms and commercially available referee kits usually do not come with a soccer referee watch. One of my favorite and best soccer referee watch is the Ultrak Soccer Referee Watch.  It features a timer with a stoppage function, a countdown timer, and a secondary count-up timer – this is really useful for managing half time and added time.  The watch has an electro-luminescent backlit display wihch is great for evening matches. It also features a 1/100 second stopwatch, time of day with an auto-calendar. It is also water resistant (hopefully!) so that it can be used rainy weather.

Similarly, the Champion Sports Soccer Referee Watch supports programmable count-down or count-up timing feature, a secondary timer, water resistance up to 300 ft., a push button backlight illuminator and a rugged watchband.  The Champion Sports Referee Watch makes a great second, backup watch for a referee.

I personally use both of these watches (at the same time, one on each wrist when I referee), one to count down and the other one to count up.  I highly recommend either one or both of them.

Proper referee attire is essential for the following reasons: -

1. Referees are in a position of authority for the duration of a match, and uniformity of the game officials plays a huge role in appearing professional, gaining credibility, and commanding respect of the coaches, players, and spectators.

2. Referee teams are an integral part of soccer at all levels of the sport from recreational to professional games. As such, they need to be undoubtedly recognized on the field and the uniform serves this purpose. Referee uniforms clearly separates the officials from the players.

3. Uniforms creates visual appearance of a team. This helps the referee team manage games more effectively.

4. Proper uniforms (with Regional or higher level badges) show players, coaches, and spectators that referees have completed the appropriate level of training and are in a position to officiate a match in a safe and fair manner.
